Before submitting an application, please read our “Are You Ready to Adopt?” section carefully. This is a crucial prerequisite to ensure adoption is the right decision for both you and the dog.

The Adoption Process

If you’re interested in a dog you’ve seen online or met at an event, we encourage you to complete an adoption application. Please remember, adoption is not a race. Our goal is always to find the best possible match for each dog and each family.

Once your application is submitted, our dedicated volunteers will review it. If approved, you will be contacted within 3 business days to schedule a meet and greet.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to make thoughtful, lifelong matches.

Availability

Meet and greets are scheduled only for dogs listed as AVAILABLE.

Dogs not listed on our website are not available for adoption yet.

No Holds or Deposits

Toe Beans Animal Rescue Society:

  • Does not accept deposits

  • Does not hold animals

  • Does not ship animals

  • Does not maintain waiting lists for unposted dogs

Applications must be submitted for the specific dog you are interested in.

During the Meet & Greet

Please allow enough time for dog meet-and-greets, as they can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the dog and the potential adopter. This time is important to ensure a good match and allows both the dog and adopter to feel comfortable with each other.

Supervised Introduction

All initial interactions are supervised by adoption staff to ensure safety for both the dog and the adopters.

Interaction & Assessment

You will have the opportunity to interact with the dog to assess compatibility. This may include leash walks (when appropriate) and observation of handling skills.

Family Attendance

The ENTIRE household must attend the meet and greet.
This includes all adults and children living in the home.

Existing Dog Compatibility

If you currently have dogs, they MUST attend a compatibility check at the shelter prior to adopting.

Important Considerations When Booking an Appointment

Home Environment Match

Please consider how the dog will realistically fit into your household and lifestyle.

To avoid mismatches:

  • Do not book a meet with a nervous or fearful dog if you have young children

  • Do not book with a high-energy breed if you cannot provide sufficient exercise and mental stimulation

Our team is happy to help guide you toward a dog that fits your home.

Requirements for Existing Dogs in the Home

  • Vaccinations: Must be up to date

  • Spay/Neuter: Must be spayed or neutered

    *Medical exemptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis*

Adoption Returns & 5-Day Compatibility Period

We want every adoption to be the right match for both the animal and their new family. We understand that sometimes, despite everyone's best efforts, an animal may not adjust well to their new home or may not be the right behavioural match for the household.

For this reason, Toe Beans Animal Rescue Society offers a 5-day compatibility period following adoption.

If, within the first 5 days, a genuine behavioural or compatibility concern arises that cannot reasonably be resolved with support and adjustment, the adopter must contact TBARS before returning the animal. Our team will work with the adopter to determine whether additional support, guidance, or a return is appropriate.

If TBARS determines that the animal should be returned within the 5-day compatibility period:

  • The animal must be returned directly to TBARS.

  • The return must be arranged with TBARS in advance. Animals may not be dropped off without prior approval.

  • 75% of the original adoption fee will be refunded.

  • 25% of the adoption fee will be retained to help offset the costs associated with processing the adoption and return.

  • Refunds will be processed after the animal has been safely returned and assessed by TBARS.

What This Policy Does Not Cover

The 5-day compatibility period is not a trial period for changing your mind about pet ownership.

A refund will not be provided simply because an adopter:

  • Decides they no longer want a pet;

  • Finds pet ownership more work than expected;

  • Changes their mind after adoption;

  • Finds the animal's normal behaviours inconvenient;

  • Experiences minor adjustment issues that can reasonably be addressed with time, patience, training, or support; or

  • Did not fully consider the financial, time, or lifestyle commitment involved in owning a pet.

Bringing a rescue animal into a new home can take time. Hiding, nervousness, accidents, vocalization, scratching, being unsettled, or needing time to adjust are not necessarily signs that an adoption has failed.

Safety Comes First

If an animal displays serious aggression, causes an injury, poses a safety concern, or there is a serious conflict between animals or people in the household, contact TBARS immediately. Do not wait for the 5-day period to expire.

TBARS will work with the adopter to determine the safest and most appropriate next step for the animal and everyone involved.

Returns After 5 Days

If an adopter is unable to keep an animal at any point after the 5-day compatibility period, the animal must be returned to TBARS and may not be sold, given away, transferred, or rehomed without TBARS's written approval.

Adoption fees are generally non-refundable after the 5-day compatibility period. Returns after this period will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with the animal's welfare being the primary consideration.

Our goal is never to make an adopter feel guilty for asking for help. If an adoption is struggling, contact us. We would rather help early than have an animal's situation become a crisis.

Dog Adoption Fees

  • Puppies (under 1 year): $600

  • Adult Dogs (1–6 years): $500

  • Senior Dogs (7 years and older): $300

What’s Included With Adoption

All dogs adopted from Toe Beans Animal Rescue Society are:

  • Spayed or neutered

  • Microchipped

  • Vaccinated with core vaccines

  • Vaccinated for rabies (age-appropriate)

Puppies under 4 months will have received at least 2–3 sets of vaccines, depending on age. Dogs 4 months and older will be up to date on rabies vaccination.

You can welcome your new companion home knowing they are protected and cared for.
